Q3: Painful swallowing



A 35-yr old Chinese man complaints of sharp pain in the throat on swallowing soonafter a hearty meal at Gurney Drive.

What do the neck X-rays suggest?

    Ouch...that must have been one hearty meal! :) He swallowed a whole bottlecap! I wonder how it was removed...

    the Xrays showed a round shape foreign body at the trachea. i think he had just swallow a bottle cap.

    I think it is a bottle cap stucked at the esophagus since the foreign body seems to look like having jagged edges and it is round.

    Indeed, that is a bottle cap you see stuck in the patient's esophagus.

    Diagnosis: Foreign Body in Esophagus.

    Removal of this foreign body will be difficult and may be dangerous to the patient due to its sharp edges. The most feared complication is mediastinitis - evidenced by chest or interscapular pain, fever and tachycardia.
